Where to book Hurghada boat trips: platforms, hotel desks and local sellers

The boat is usually the same whoever sells the seat. What changes is the price, the cancellation rule and who refunds you when the port closes. For most people a platform listing with free cancellation is the safest way to book Hurghada excursions.

Hurghada excursions are sold through four channels: online platforms (GetYourGuide, Headout and a few on Tiqets), the boat companies' own websites, hotel excursion desks run for tour operators such as TUI, and local agencies or street and WhatsApp sellers who take cash. In many cases they are selling places on the same boats. The question is not "which boat is best" but "which seller treats you fairly when something changes".

This page compares them on what matters on a boat day: the contract, cancellation, weather refunds, cash extras and price. We earn a commission from GetYourGuide, Headout and Tiqets when you book through our links; the price is the same for you.

Where to book Hurghada trips: the short answer

Platform (GetYourGuide, Headout) Operator direct Hotel desk (e.g. TUI) Local agency or cash seller
Who you pay the platform, by card the boat company the tour operator, by card the agent or guide, often cash
Cancellation per listing; GetYourGuide default 24 h own terms, often not published TUI: full refund 24 h before varies: 24 h to 7 days
Port closed by weather new date or full refund (GetYourGuide); Headout refunds after the supplier does ask the operator ask the rep you chase the seller
Price from the live listing sometimes cheaper TUI from £41; others unpublished sometimes cheaper, sometimes dearer
Paper trail full email full ask for a receipt

Our default: book a well-reviewed platform listing with free cancellation, read its "Not included" list, and carry small notes for the cash extras. Book direct when the operator is clearly cheaper and you are happy with its terms. Use the hotel desk when insurance and a familiar rep matter more than the price.

Who you are really buying from

On GetYourGuide the contract for the trip is made directly between you and the boat company; GetYourGuide acts as the company's commercial agent and collects the money for it. Headout describes itself in the same way: it facilitates the booking, and you buy the experience from the supplier. Neither platform runs the boats, employs the guides or inspects safety. GetYourGuide asks boat suppliers for insurance per vessel, lifejackets, radio, GPS and safety briefings, but does not check them on the water.

Many Hurghada boats sell on both platforms under identical titles: the sea taxi to Orange Bay or Magawish appears on GetYourGuide and on Headout with the same name. Some Headout and Tiqets listings also share word-for-word wording, such as "National Park fees and VAT, €10 per person, cash", which suggests one wholesaler feeding several sites. Most listings do not name the boat company at all.

So the brand on the booking page tells you little about the boat. The reviews, the itinerary, the time on the island and the list of exclusions tell you a lot more. Our operator reviews sort out who runs what.

Hurghada tours on GetYourGuide

GetYourGuide carries most of the Hurghada snorkel inventory and almost all of the reviews: the most-reviewed boat day has more than 9,000. The rules worth knowing:

  • Cancellation. If the listing says nothing else, you can cancel for a full refund more than 24 hours before the start; later cancellations and no-shows are not refunded. Each listing can set its own window, so check it.
  • Weather. If the boat company cancels because of weather or a port closure, you are offered a new date or a full refund. If you choose neither within two days, the booking is cancelled and refunded automatically.
  • Reserve now, pay later. On selected trips, your card is charged 72 hours before the start, not at booking.
  • Price matching covers only the same activity from the same supplier, publicly bookable elsewhere online with the same inclusions. It is not a general price guarantee: a cheaper boat, or a cash price at the marina, does not count.
  • Ranking. The order of listings uses popularity and ratings, and also the revenue GetYourGuide earns, including commission. GetYourGuide's own terms warn that its price can be higher than the supplier charges elsewhere.
  • Local fees. Prices are mostly all-in, but local fees can be charged on the spot if the listing says so. That is where "national-park fee not included" sits.

Headout: when it is first and what to watch

Headout is a second option for most Hurghada boat days, with a smaller range and far fewer reviews. It is first in one case: Utopia island, which is not on GetYourGuide. Its Utopia listing is new, with no reviews yet.

  • Cancellation is per listing. Most Hurghada boat days show free cancellation up to 24 hours before, but the Dolphin World show, the pool "swim with dolphins" and parasailing listings are non-cancellable.
  • Refunds are paid once the supplier has refunded Headout. Its guarantee covers no-show guides or missing transfers, but not weather.
  • Pay later works only on bookings made at least 96 hours ahead; the card is charged 12–24 hours before the free-cancellation window closes.
  • "Private" speedboats are priced per person on Headout, and several newer listings exclude "National Park fees and VAT, €10 per person" and outer-resort transfers of €10, both in cash.

Tiqets and the price checks

Tiqets sells a handful of Hurghada boat trips with very few reviews; some come from resellers based abroad. We show them only where the same trip appears on several platforms. The price checks below put the same or a near-identical trip side by side. Today the Giftun full day is a few dollars cheaper on Headout and Tiqets than the most-reviewed GetYourGuide listing; the budget Orange Bay yacht day is cheapest on GetYourGuide, where Zanetta sells it; the semi-submarine costs about the same everywhere. The boat, the beach, the pick-up area or the inclusions may differ, so open each listing before you choose on price.

Same trip, different prices: platform vs direct vs agency

There is no fixed mark-up. Some operators charge the same everywhere, others undercut the platforms on their own site, and some online agents charge more than the platforms for the same boat.

  • Same price: Zanetta's Orange Bay day costs $26.35 on its own site and on GetYourGuide (see the Zanetta review).
  • Cheaper direct: Royal Cruise Hurghada sells its Orange Bay day for $45 on its own site, against from $53 on GetYourGuide. Its own pages show no cancellation terms (Royal Cruise review). The Royal Seascope semi-submarine is $15 direct without transfer, against about $22 on platforms with pick-up: the difference is the taxi.
  • Dearer through an agent: Egypt Excursions Online sells an Orange Bay yacht for $40 and the Go Shalabi 6-islands speedboat for $63, against from $26 and from $45 for same-titled GetYourGuide listings. Full refunds need 7 days' notice, and nothing is refunded inside 3 days (Egypt Excursions Online review).

Whatever the headline price, compare the total. A cheap listing that excludes the park fee, a coast-guard fee and an outer-resort transfer can end up dearer than one that includes them.

Hurghada excursions with TUI and other hotel desks

If you came on a package, the rep or the hotel desk will sell you the same kind of boat day. TUI UK publishes its Hurghada excursions online, supplied by Travco Group for Tourism. Its full-day snorkeling cruise to Mahmya on Giftun starts at £41 and includes lunch, soft drinks with lunch, gear, air-conditioned transport and insurance; about €5 environmental fee is paid in cash at the marina. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before. Outer resorts pay a supplement: €8 from El Gouna, €10 from Safaga and Soma Bay, €14 from Kalawy Bay. TUI also lists an Elite VIP cruise from £67 and a private boat from £93.

Anex, the big Russian-market operator, names its Hurghada boat excursions but publishes no prices; you buy them through Anex or from its guide in the hotel. There is no reliable figure for how much more desks charge than other channels, so we do not quote one. The UK government's Egypt travel advice recommends booking activities through your resort or approved agents, and making sure your insurance covers air or sea rescue. More in our hotel desks review.

Local agencies, marina sellers and WhatsApp

Cash-on-the-day sellers are quick and flexible: you can book the evening before, pay the guide in the morning and change plans easily. Hurghada Lovers, for example, takes €25 for a snorkel boat in cash to the guide, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. The catch is the refund. If the port closes or the trip changes, there is no platform behind you and you chase the seller yourself.

Before you pay anyone you met on a beach, by a hotel gate or on social media:

  • Look the seller or boat company up in the CDWS member directory. The Chamber of Diving and Water Sports licenses snorkel providers.
  • Check the CDWS black list. It names companies and websites that are not operating legally, including Facebook pages, Instagram and TikTok sellers and private-boat sites around Hurghada.
  • Get a written receipt with the company name, the date, the price and what it includes.

None of this makes local sellers illegal or bad value. It just means the checks are yours to do.

Booking a boat day without surprises

  1. Pick the trip by itinerary, time on the island and reviews, not by the "luxury" or "islands" count in the title.
  2. Open "Not included" and add up the cash extras: park fee, coast-guard fee, outer-resort transfer, lunch, photos.
  3. Check the cancellation window on that listing, and whether pay-later is available.
  4. Book early in the holiday so a port closure leaves you a spare day.
  5. Give your hotel and room number when you book, and expect the pick-up time by message the evening before.
  6. Bring your passport or a clear copy, cash in small notes and the voucher on your phone.
Is it better to book Hurghada excursions online or locally?

For most people, online with free cancellation. You get a written itinerary, a cancellation window and a refund if the boat company cancels for weather. Locally you can sometimes pay less and book at short notice, but if the trip is cancelled you deal with the seller yourself.

Is GetYourGuide reliable for Hurghada boat trips?

The platform is an agent; the boat company runs the trip. What GetYourGuide adds is the booking record, the cancellation rule shown on the listing (24 hours by default) and a new date or refund if the supplier cancels for weather. Judge the boat by its reviews, itinerary and exclusions.

Are hotel excursion desks more expensive?

Often a little, but there is no reliable figure. TUI's Giftun day starts at £41 plus about €5 in cash, against from about $26 for a budget Orange Bay day online. The desk includes insurance and a 24-hour refund rule, which some people value.

Can I pay for Hurghada boat trips in cash?

Local sellers and some agencies take cash, and the extras on a platform booking (park fee, transfers, photos, tips) are usually cash too. Bring small US dollar or euro notes. Platforms charge your card online.

What happens if my boat trip is cancelled because of the weather?

When the Red Sea Ports Authority closes the port, no boat sails. A GetYourGuide booking gets a new date or a full refund; Headout refunds once the supplier has refunded it; a cash seller should give your money back, but you have to chase it.

How do I check a Hurghada boat company is licensed?

Search its name or hotel in the CDWS member directory, then make sure it is not on the CDWS black list. Snorkel providers must be CDWS members, licensed by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, with a navigation licence for each boat.
