El Gouna snorkeling trips: boats from Abu Tig Marina to Dolphin House and the reefs

El Gouna has lagoons and sandy beaches but no house reef: snorkeling here means a boat from Abu Tig Marina. The upside is that Dolphin House is as close from El Gouna as from Hurghada, without the 40-minute drive to Hurghada Marina.

El Gouna snorkeling works differently from the rest of the coast. The town is built around lagoons and sandy beaches, and its own dive and activity pages describe no house reef to swim out to. Everything worth seeing under water is a boat ride away, and the boats leave from Abu Tig Marina, where the dive clubs and the El Gouna semi-submarine are based.

That is less of a drawback than it sounds. Sha'ab El Erg, the reef sold as Dolphin House, lies about 19 km east of El Gouna and about 20 km from Hurghada Marina, so the crossing is no longer from here. What you save is the road: a Hurghada boat day from El Gouna costs you about 40 minutes each way in a minibus, plus a surcharge.

El Gouna snorkeling: lagoons, not reefs, from the beach

If you are used to Makadi or Soma Bay, where you step off a hotel jetty onto coral, El Gouna will disappoint on that front. The lagoons are fine for swimming and paddling, but plan your snorkeling around boat days. For a beach-reef holiday, look at Makadi Bay or the other places in snorkeling from the beach.

El Gouna snorkeling spots: the reefs the boats visit

The dive clubs at Abu Tig list a long set of sites. For snorkelers, two matter most; the rest are dive sites you visit as a passenger on a diving boat.

  • Gotha Abu Nugar North and South. Very shallow coral gardens, about 9 m with tops close to the surface: the easy snorkel off El Gouna. Abu Nugar is also one of HEPCA's dolphin resting areas, with a band where boats may not enter. (It is not Abu Minqar, the mangrove island off Hurghada Marina.)
  • Dolphin House (Sha'ab El Erg). A horseshoe reef with a sandy lagoon, pinnacles and reef to about 15 m: the wild-dolphin reef of this coast. Details below.

The others, such as Gotha Abu Galawa, Shaab Abu Nuhas with its shipwrecks, Erg Iris, Shabaha, Umm Gamar and Carless Reef, are dive sites; Carless is an exposed offshore reef, not a snorkel spot. The captain chooses the stops by the wind.

Dolphin House from El Gouna

Dolphin House is the trip that makes El Gouna a good base for snorkelers. HEPCA, the Hurghada conservation association, describes Sha'ab El Erg as an area dolphins use mainly for resting during the day. The animals are mostly Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins, sometimes spinner dolphins. Angela Ziltener of Dolphin Watch Alliance, who works from El Gouna, has identified more than 200 bottlenose dolphins around El Gouna and Hurghada, and warns that boats drive snorkelers at resting dolphins.

Dolphins are wild: some days they are there and calm, some days not, and no operator can promise them. Listings say "if conditions allow" for a reason. The reef is exposed, so in a strong north wind captains skip it or swap it for sheltered stops.

The EEAA, the government agency that runs the protectorates, lists a fee of USD 10 per foreign visitor for the Erg and Fanous zones and a limit of 300 visitors per zone per day; how the limit is applied on the water is not published. Some listings include "marine fees", others add a cash fee, and some operators add a coast-guard fee of about €5. Ask before you pay.

El Gouna boat trips you can book

The platforms have only a few listings that really start in El Gouna.

See all trips on GetYourGuide →Prices checked on 20 October 2026

GetYourGuide files the Royal Cruise Elite VIP Dolphin House day with massage, from $50, under El Gouna. Royal Cruise Hurghada is based at Hurghada Marina, so check where the boat leaves and whether El Gouna pick-up costs extra.

El Gouna private boat trip

Few private boats on the platforms start in El Gouna; Orca at Abu Tig runs speedboats. As a benchmark, Egypt Divers in Hurghada charges €600 for a full-day private boat for up to 9 people, plus €10 per person for transfers from El Gouna. On a private speedboat, ask how many guests the price covers and which fees are extra. More in private boats.

El Gouna diving centres and dive sites

The town lists five dive centres: Orca Dive Club in the Turtle's Inn at Abu Tig Marina, Dream Team Divers, Scuba World at the Sheraton Miramar, Blue Brother Divers at Cook's Club and The Dive Connection on the Club Paradisio beach (El Gouna dive centres). Orca runs full-day boats, speedboats and snorkeling.

Two names you may remember are no longer here. Colona has moved from El Gouna to Zahabia Beach in Hurghada (our Colona review), and Emperor Divers, which earlier had centres in Hurghada, Soma Bay and El Gouna, now sells only liveaboards from this area (our Emperor review).

Check any centre in the CDWS directory. For a first dive from a boat, Egypt's rules require one instructor per beginner; ask "1:1?". El Gouna Hospital runs the area's hyperbaric chamber, for nine patients (El Gouna medical departments). More in diving and try dives.

Hurghada trips from El Gouna, and El Gouna as a day trip from Hurghada

For Giftun, Orange Bay or Magawish, El Gouna is the wrong end of the coast: the boats leave Hurghada Marina, about 40 minutes away, and the minibus collects other hotels too. Pick-up windows from El Gouna run up to 90 minutes, with the time confirmed the evening before. The surcharges seen: TUI €8 per adult (€4 per child), Egypt Divers €10, GoShalabi $15, Royal Cruise $50 against $45 from Hurghada, and $5–10 or €10 in cash on some platform listings. James & Mac's free pick-up does not cover El Gouna. Read Giftun island and Orange Bay before you pick a beach.

Coming the other way, an El Gouna snorkel day from Hurghada rarely beats a Hurghada departure, since Dolphin House is the same distance from both.

Wind, waves and when the boats stay in

The north to north-west wind blows all year, usually stronger in the afternoon, and El Gouna's boats head east and north into it. Mornings are calmer, and lagoons turn milky on windy afternoons. The Red Sea Ports Authority closes the port in bad weather, usually for one to three days; past closures have covered El Gouna as well as Hurghada and Safaga. Keep a spare day early in the holiday for Dolphin House. Water is coolest in February and March, about 22.5 °C: wear a shorty or 3 mm wetsuit from December to April (best time to go).

Is there snorkeling from the beach in El Gouna?

Not to speak of. El Gouna is lagoons and sandy beaches with no house reef; snorkeling means a boat from Abu Tig Marina. For shore snorkeling go to Makadi Bay, Sahl Hasheesh or Soma Bay.

What are the best El Gouna snorkeling spots?

Gotha Abu Nugar's shallow coral gardens (about 9 m) for easy snorkeling, and Dolphin House (Sha'ab El Erg) for the chance of wild dolphins. Most other sites are for divers.

Is Dolphin House closer from El Gouna or from Hurghada?

About the same: Sha'ab El Erg is about 19 km east of El Gouna and about 20 km from Hurghada Marina. Starting from El Gouna you skip the 40-minute drive to Hurghada Marina.

Are dolphins guaranteed on an El Gouna boat trip?

No. Dolphins rest at Sha'ab El Erg and Abu Nugar by day, but some days they are not there or not calm, and boats must keep 30 m away. No operator can promise them.

Which El Gouna diving centre should I choose?

The town lists Orca, Dream Team Divers, Scuba World, Blue Brother Divers and The Dive Connection. Check the centre in the CDWS directory and, for a try dive from a boat, ask for one instructor per beginner.

How much extra is a Hurghada boat trip from El Gouna?

Usually €8–10 or $5–15 per person for the transfer, depending on the seller, plus about 40 minutes' drive each way.
