Half-day and sunset snorkeling trips from Hurghada

Only a handful of Hurghada boats are genuinely short: 3–4 hours, from about $24. Many "sunset" listings are full island days of 5–9 hours — read the duration, not the title.

Half day snorkeling in Hurghada makes sense when a full boat day is more than you want: the standard yacht trip collects you between 07:00 and 08:15, makes two reef stops, puts you on a beach, feeds you lunch and brings you back to Hurghada Marina between 15:30 and 16:30. A short trip skips the early pick-up and the long crossings. The catch is that the word "sunset" in a listing title tells you very little about how long you will be out.

Of the trips sold with "sunset" in the name, only four are really short. The two best-known — "Sunset Paradise Island" and "Sunset Hula Hula" — are listed at 5 to 9 hours, and a "late start" catamaran leaves at 11:00 and stays out until evening. This page separates the short trips from the long ones, explains when a morning half day beats an evening on the water, and lists what you pay on top. For the full range of formats see all Hurghada boat trips.

Half day snorkeling Hurghada: the boats that really last 3–4 hours

These are the listings whose stated duration is genuinely short. None of them names the boat company.

Trip Length Price What the listing includes
3-hour sunset yacht and snorkeling 3 hours from $26 reef snorkeling, fish and chips, unlimited soft drinks; rated 4.7 from 678 reviews
3-hour sunset dolphin trip 3–4.5 hours from $24 a dolphin search, snorkeling, lunch; 4.7 from 92 reviews
Adults-only sunset cruise with dinner 3 hours from $44 snorkeling and dinner; 4.9 from 30 reviews
Sunset intro dive, dolphins and snorkeling 4 hours from $27 a 10–15-minute intro dive; only 3 reviews so far

The 3-hour sunset yacht is the one with a real track record, and it is the trip we would book for a first short evening on the water. The sunset dolphin trip is cheap, but think about the geography before you book it for the dolphins: Dolphin House (Sha'ab El Erg) is about 1.5 hours from Hurghada Marina by day yacht, so on a trip of three to four and a half hours the time at the reef is short. Ask which reef you snorkel at and where the boat looks for dolphins.

The intro-dive trip is a taster, not a dive day: 10–15 minutes under water. From a boat, Egyptian rules require one instructor for each beginner, so ask "is it one to one?" before you pay. Our try-dive guide explains the rest.

Morning half days by speedboat

If you want the reefs rather than the sunset, the shared speedboats are the better short option. The speedboat with dolphins and two islands runs about 4 hours from $45 and has more than 4,000 reviews. The Paradise speedboat (4 hours, from $35) offers morning, sunset, private and shared options — the price shown is the cheapest. A speedboat reaches the Giftun reefs in about 20 minutes, against 30–45 minutes by yacht, but it slams in a north wind and sellers flag it as unsuitable for back problems. The sea taxi to Orange Bay or Magawish also has a 4-hour option; it is a ride plus beach time, not a guided snorkel — details on the Orange Bay speedboat page.

Sunset cruise Hurghada: read the duration, not the title

Several of the most-reviewed "sunset" listings are full days that simply end late. If a listing mentions lunch, it is almost certainly a day trip.

  • Sunset Paradise Island, from $32, is listed at 5–9 hours. Paradise is a beach on the southern tip of Giftun Kebir, a slightly longer crossing than Orange Bay — see Paradise Island.
  • Sunset Hula Hula, from $25, is also 5–9 hours. Hula Hula is a beach-club brand; sellers place it on Giftun or pair it with Magawish, so ask which island your boat lands on (Hula Hula and the small islands).
  • The late-start catamaran, from $28, leaves at 11:00 and runs 7–8 hours with a semi-submarine view, snorkeling and an island stop. Good if you hate 07:30 pick-ups; not a short evening.
  • The afternoon sailing cruise, from $64, is Egypt Sun Marine's afternoon sailing-boat trip: about 5 hours with an island visit and lunch, rated 4.2 from 13 reviews.
  • The Nefertari sunset or morning cruise, from $85 with pick-up, runs 4–5 hours. The Nefertari is a pharaonic-style boat with an underwater viewing platform; Egypt Sun Marine sells a Nefertari cruise from Makadi Bay for $85 on its own site, but the listing does not name the boat company.

Sellers' own sites confirm the pattern: GoShalabi lists its sunset yacht trip on goshalabi.com as a 5-hour cruise.

Morning half day or sunset boat trip?

For snorkeling, the morning wins. The wind in Hurghada blows from the north and north-west in every month of the year, and it is stronger in the afternoon. By late afternoon the sea is choppier, the shallow lagoons often turn milky, and the swim from the boat is harder work. A morning half day gives you calmer, clearer water at the reef.

For the boat ride, the light and the heat, the evening wins. In July and August the average afternoon high is 37–38 °C and UV is very high around midday from May to August; a trip that starts mid-afternoon misses the worst of it. An evening on deck is also the gentlest introduction for children who have never been on a boat.

Winter changes the picture. The average night-time low falls to about 12–13 °C from December to February, and the sea is at its coldest in February and March, around 22.5 °C. Climbing out wet into a breeze as the sun drops is cold, so bring a dry layer and a towel, and consider a shorty wetsuit from December to April. Our best time to go page has the month-by-month detail.

If you are prone to seasickness, short trips are kinder simply because the crossings are short. Sit mid-boat, look at the horizon and skip the heavy meal before you sail, as the NHS advice on motion sickness suggests.

Egypt time: UTC+2, UTC+3 from the last Friday of April to the last Thursday of October. Sunset boats usually leave the marina about two and a half to three hours before sunset; check your pick-up time.

The table gives sunrise and sunset for the middle of each month and the boarding window for a 3-hour sunset cruise. Boats may not return to port in darkness — the Hurghada dive centre James & Mac gives that as the reason it runs no night dives — so sunset trips are timed to be back around dusk. Do not expect a late night on the water.

Semi-submarine half day: Royal Seascope at 15:00

The shortest reef trip of all is the semi-submarine. Royal Seascope is Egypt Sun Marine's yellow semi-submarine: you sit in a window cabin about 3 m below the surface, and the boat never dives. It runs about three times a day, at roughly 09:00, 11:00 and 15:00, for 2 hours each. For non-swimmers, toddlers and anyone who gets seasick it is the right choice; strong swimmers will find the view limited and the snorkel stop short.

Royal Seascope, afternoon departure
  1. The boat leaves; about 15 minutes to the reefthe voucher names the pontoon

  2. Reef viewing from the window cabin, about 3 m below the surfaceabout 45 minutes

  3. Snorkel stop with gear, lifejacket and a snorkel guideabout 30 minutes; staying on board is usually possible — ask

  4. The run backsoft drinks on board, toilets, no lunch

  5. Back at the marina

Booked direct, the Hurghada departure costs $15 without transfer. On the platforms it costs a little more with pick-up included — the difference is essentially the taxi. Bring ID or your passport, and expect a photographer on board offering prints.

Dinner cruise Hurghada and evenings for adults

The adults-only sunset cruise with snorkeling and dinner is the only trip in this group sold as adults-only: 3 hours, from $44, rated 4.9 from 30 reviews. It is the one to pick if you want a quiet evening rather than a boat full of families.

Do not assume alcohol is served. Most budget trips serve soft drinks only, and drinking before snorkeling is a bad idea anyway. If you want a dinner cruise just for your group, the private options below are the way to get it — GoShalabi lists a private dinner and sunset yacht cruise on its own site at $360 per boat.

Private half day and private sunset cruise

For a family or a group of friends, a private boat for half a day is often better value than it looks, because GetYourGuide prices most private speedboats per boat, not per person.

For four people, a private boat from $67 works out cheaper per head than four seats on the 3-hour sunset yacht — check how many guests the price covers. As direct benchmarks, the Makadi dive centre Egypt Divers charges EUR 300 for a private half day of 2–3 hours (no diving) for up to 9 people, and GoShalabi lists a private sunset and barbecue trip to Magawish by speedboat at $349. Headout's "private" speedboats are priced per person, so compare carefully. Everything about choosing a whole boat is on our private speedboat and yacht page.

Prices and cash extras on short trips

What a day on the water costs, by type of boat

Typical prices on the platforms, checked on 20 October 2026; private boats are priced per boat.

Short trips are cheap, but the cash extras are the same as on a full day:

  • Giftun park fee. Giftun lies inside the Northern Red Sea Islands protectorate. The fee is USD 5 per foreign visitor (children under 7 free); sellers usually ask about €5 in cash when it is not in the price. The fee is doubled for visits that continue after sunset, so on a sunset trip that lands at Giftun, ask whether the fee is included and at which rate. A rise to USD 10 has been decreed but postponed. The rates are on the EEAA fee page.
  • Coast-guard fee. Some operators add about €5 per person.
  • Pick-up from outer resorts. Free pick-up is standard within Hurghada; from Makadi, Sahl Hasheesh, El Gouna, Soma Bay or Safaga there is often a surcharge, and the pick-up window can be up to 90 minutes. From Soma Bay a "3-hour" sunset trip can take most of the afternoon and evening.
  • Tips and photos. Tipping the crew is customary and modest — small Egyptian-pound notes in the crew box at the end. Photo packages are extra.

On GetYourGuide, free cancellation up to 24 hours before is the default unless the listing says otherwise, and if the boat company cancels for weather you are offered a new date or a full refund. When the Red Sea Ports Authority closes the port in strong wind, every boat stays in, short trips included. Our prices guide covers every band in detail.

Who a short trip suits

  • Non-swimmers and toddlers: the semi-submarine, then a calm-day sunset yacht. See Hurghada with children.
  • Couples: the adults-only dinner cruise or the 3-hour sunset yacht.
  • Snorkelers who care about the reef: a morning speedboat half day, or a full day to the better reefs.
  • Guests in Makadi, Soma Bay or Safaga: a short trip from Hurghada is not short once you add the drive; the semi-submarine from Makadi or a local house reef may suit you better.
Is half day snorkeling in Hurghada worth it?

Yes, if you want one swim and a boat ride rather than a whole day. A morning half day by speedboat gives you calmer water at the reefs; a 3-hour sunset trip is more about the ride and the light. If the reef matters most, a full day reaches better spots.

How long is a sunset cruise in Hurghada?

It depends on the listing. The genuinely short ones last 3–4 hours. "Sunset Paradise Island" and "Sunset Hula Hula" are listed at 5–9 hours, and the late-start catamaran leaves at 11:00. Check the duration line, not the title.

Does the sunset cruise leave from Hurghada Marina?

Most Hurghada boat trips sail from Hurghada Marina (also called the New Marina), and the voucher names the meeting point. Check whether hotel pick-up is included or whether you make your own way there. Royal Seascope also runs from Makadi and El Gouna.

Will I see dolphins on a sunset dolphin trip?

Maybe. Dolphins are wild: some days they are there and calm, some days not, and no operator can promise them. A good crew keeps 30 m away, never chases, and asks you to wear a lifejacket in the water — the HEPCA dolphin code sets these rules.

Is there a dinner cruise in Hurghada?

Yes. One 3-hour adults-only sunset cruise includes snorkeling and dinner, from $44. For your own group, private dinner and sunset yachts are sold by the boat.

What should I bring on a sunset boat trip in Hurghada?

Your passport or a clear copy (names go on a coast-guard list), small cash for fees and tips, a towel, a dry layer for the ride back in winter, and a rash guard or mineral sunscreen.
