Dolphin House Hurghada, Egypt: the Sha'ab El Erg reef and how to visit it

Dolphin House is Sha'ab El Erg, a horseshoe reef about 20 km north-north-east of Hurghada Marina where wild dolphins rest by day. Shared yacht days start from about $21; the dolphins are wild and never guaranteed, so pick a calm day and a boat that follows the rules.

Dolphin House Hurghada — sometimes spelled "Dolphine House" — is not a building, a pool or a park. It is Sha'ab El Erg, a large horseshoe-shaped reef out in open water north of Hurghada, where pods of wild dolphins come to rest during the day after hunting offshore at night. Boats moor at the edge of the reef, and snorkelers swim into the lagoon in the hope of seeing them.

Two things to get straight before you book. First, it has nothing to do with Dolphin World, the captive dolphinarium with pool shows in Makadi Bay — that is a land attraction, covered in our Dolphin World review. Second, there are other reefs nicknamed "Dolphin House" far to the south near Marsa Alam (Sha'ab Samadai and Sataya). Hurghada's Dolphin House is Sha'ab El Erg only, and any listing that says "Marsa Alam" is a different trip, about 250 km away.

Our short verdict: worth a day if you are a steady swimmer and the sea is flat, not worth it in a strong north wind, and only enjoyable on a boat that keeps its distance from the dolphins. If you see them, it is often the highlight of the holiday. If you do not, you still get two decent snorkel stops — as long as you went in knowing that.

Sha'ab El Erg lies at about 27.397 N 33.872 E, roughly 20 km north-north-east of Hurghada Marina and about 19 km due east of El Gouna. That geography matters: the reef is as close from El Gouna as from Hurghada, so if you are staying in El Gouna, a boat from Abu Tig Marina saves you the drive of about 40 minutes down to Hurghada Marina. See our El Gouna guide for the boats that leave from there.

From Hurghada Marina the run north takes about 1.5 hours on a day yacht. One operator's timetable is typical: it leaves at 08:00 and reaches the reef around 09:30. A speedboat does it well under an hour. Distances you may read elsewhere, such as "70 km", are wrong.

The reef itself is several kilometres long. It encloses a lagoon with a shallow, sloping sandy floor dotted with small coral pinnacles, and a channel cuts through the reef block. Dive centres name sub-sites around it — Gota Sha'ab El Erg, Poseidon Garden with its table and brain corals, and Manta Point on the outer reef, where mantas turn up in season. Snorkel boats use the Dolphin House mooring on Sha'ab El Erg.

What you really see at Dolphin House: the dolphins and the reef

The dolphins here are mostly Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins, sometimes spinner dolphins. Adult bottlenoses around Hurghada are 2–2.5 m long and can weigh up to 230 kg. According to HEPCA, the local conservation association that maintains the moorings, dolphins around Hurghada often sleep in the morning hours and early afternoons, resting at a few reefs — Sha'ab El Erg is one of them — after a night of hunting in open sea. Mothers nurse their calves while resting. The pods tend to move in and out of the lagoon through the channel at dawn and dusk.

Put that together and you understand the day. When the dolphins are there, they are usually resting, not playing. A good encounter is a slow, quiet one: you float at the surface, the pod passes below or beside you, and it is over in minutes. A bad encounter is a boat racing up to a sleeping pod and twenty people jumping in on top of it — which is exactly what the rules forbid.

The odds are honest only when they are vague. Dolphins are wild: some days they are there and calm, some days not, and no operator can promise them. The platform listings themselves word it as "if conditions allow". Ignore any percentage you see quoted: no independent sighting figures are published for Sha'ab El Erg.

What you can count on is the reef. The lagoon and pinnacles go down to about 15 m, with Napoleon wrasse, rays, turtles and morays reported around the reef. Most days also include a second snorkel stop at another reef on the way back, usually with lunch on board.

The rules: HEPCA's dolphin code and what it means in the water

Since 2013 the HEPCA dolphin code of conduct has been mandatory at Sha'ab El Erg, with violations fined EGP 10,000. The full text is on HEPCA's dolphin code page. In practice it means:

  • Boats stay at least 30 m from the dolphins, approach slowly and parallel to them at no more than 4 knots, and never chase, herd, encircle or split a group. They do not follow dolphins into lagoons or resting areas, never come at them from directly in front or behind, and keep music, horns and shouting off.
  • Swimmers wear fins, mask, snorkel and a lifejacket, enter the water gently, swim quietly alongside the group and never dive down on it. Let the dolphins approach you. No touching (it spreads disease), no feeding, no litter.
  • No sea scooters near dolphins. That is why we do not recommend the speedboat add-ons that bundle a scooter with a dolphin stop.

HEPCA's map of Sha'ab El Erg shows a band along the reef where boats and zodiacs may not enter at all, with the mooring buoys at the southern tip and free access for snorkelers and divers from the inner lagoon. So the correct way to do it is: the boat ties up at the mooring, you swim in from the lagoon side, and the guide leads.

Dolphin House trip Hurghada: yacht, VIP boat, speedboat or private

Most Dolphin House days follow one of four formats.

Shared day yacht. The standard product: a big boat leaves the marina early, sails for about 1.5 hours, spends a good while at Sha'ab El Erg, then makes a second snorkel stop with lunch on board. Expect a crowd and a slow crossing, but also shade, toilets and a proper meal. Headout's listing Dolphin House: Dolphin Watching Boat Tour with Snorkeling, Lunch & Optional Transfers describes two snorkel stops with two to four guides; GetYourGuide's best-reviewed shared option is Hurghada: Dolphin House Yacht Trip & Swim W Dolphins & Lunch.

VIP yacht. The same route with a bigger buffet and a massage on board. Royal Cruise Hurghada sells the Elite VIP Dolphin House day under its own name — its trips are run by its partner aqua centre, Fun Aqua — and it is the best-rated Dolphin House listing on GetYourGuide. "VIP" adds comfort, not dolphins. See our Royal Cruise Hurghada review.

Shared speedboat. A seat on a fast boat — less time sailing, more time in the water, a harder ride in chop. GoShalabi's Dolphin House speedboat is the main one; read our Go Shalabi review. Sellers themselves warn that speedboats are not suitable for back problems.

Private speedboat. The whole boat for your group. Hurghada: Private Speedboat to Dolphin House with Pickup is priced per boat, not per person. For a family or group of friends it can be the best version of this trip, because you choose the timing and the captain can wait quietly at the mooring rather than keeping to a full boat's schedule. More in our private boats guide.

The return leg runs south with the swell, so it is gentler than the way out. The run north is the one that pitches: in a north-westerly the bow climbs every wave for more than an hour. If you are prone to seasickness, follow the NHS advice — sit mid-boat, look at the horizon, stay in fresh air, no screens, no heavy breakfast, and take tablets or a patch before you board.

The pick-up time usually arrives the evening before by message or email. Wait at the main road entrance of your hotel: drivers on these collections do not wait long.

Checked on 20 October 2026. Many boat trips include the island or park fee, many don't: read the listing.

Then the cash extras. The EEAA, which runs Egypt's protectorates, lists a fee of USD 10 per foreign visitor (EGP 50 for Egyptians) for the Erg and Fanous zones, with a limit of 300 visitors per zone per day; how that limit is applied on the water is not published. See the EEAA fee page. A rise to USD 15 has been decreed but postponed. Listings handle it differently: some include "marine fees", others add a cash fee, and some Headout listings exclude "National Park fees and VAT, €10 per person, cash". Some operators also add a coast-guard fee of about €5 per person — ask what each cash charge is for.

Outer-resort pick-ups often cost extra too: Egypt Divers adds €10 from Soma Bay or El Gouna and €15 from Safaga. Bring small euro or dollar notes for fees, drinks, photos and the crew box. Tipping the crew is customary and modest: small Egyptian-pound notes in the box at the end of the day. Our price guide puts these numbers next to the other trips.

How to judge a boat before you pay. Ask how many guests it takes and how many guides it carries: the snorkel rule in Egypt is one guide per 12 snorkelers. Ask whether it ties up at the moorings and swims guests in from the lagoon, or uses a zodiac to drop people near the dolphins. Ask whether lifejackets are lent to everyone. A seller who answers "you will swim with the dolphins, guaranteed" has told you what you need to know.

Dolphin House reviews: what the ratings say

On GetYourGuide the Dolphin House listings score well. Royal Cruise's Elite VIP day is rated 4.9 from 854 reviews, the shared yacht g1136565 4.5 from 1,108 reviews, the transfer-included day g1358756 4.6 from 144, GoShalabi's speedboat 4.7 from 95 and the private speedboat 4.5 from 167. The cheapest full day on GetYourGuide, Hurghada: Swim with Dolphins & Full-Day Dolphin House Cruise, sits lower at 4.3. On Headout, h38057 is rated 4.7 from 78 reviews and the VIP cruise h40888 4.6 from 215.

Read the recent reviews on your chosen listing rather than the average. On a dolphin trip luck plays a part: a day without dolphins can pull a rating down even when the boat did everything right. The useful reviews mention the crew, the briefing, the lunch and how the boat behaved around the pod.

Dolphin House Hurghada diving

Divers know Sha'ab El Erg as a site in its own right: the lagoon, the pinnacles of Poseidon Garden, the tunnel at Gota Sha'ab El Erg and the outer reef at Manta Point. Orca, a dive centre in El Gouna, lists Dolphin House at 16 m. Dive centres say dolphins sometimes join divers here — again, a bonus, never a promise. The code applies under water too: divers do not chase or touch.

If you are not certified, a few yacht days combine Dolphin House with a try dive, such as Hurghada: Scuba Diving, Dolphin House & Snorkel Yacht Trip. From a boat, Egypt's Chamber of Diving and Water Sports (CDWS) requires one instructor per intro diver — ask "1:1?" before you pay. Our diving guide explains try dives, ages and the medical form.

When to go: wind, waves and the best time of day

Sha'ab El Erg is open and exposed, with a current in the channel. The prevailing wind around Hurghada blows from the north and north-west in every month, so there is no calm season; on average May and September are the windiest months and November–December the calmest, and afternoons are windier than mornings. Our best time guide has the month-by-month picture.

On a windy day the captain may skip Dolphin House and swap it for sheltered reefs near Giftun — the right call, even if the trip title promised dolphins. In real bad weather the Red Sea Ports Authority, not the operator, closes the port. Reported closures came at about 22–30 knots of wind with 2–4 m waves and usually lasted one to three days, mostly in winter and spring. If that happens on a platform booking, GetYourGuide offers a new date or a full refund when the supplier cancels for weather; on Headout the refund follows once the supplier has refunded it. Book your Dolphin House day early in the holiday so a closure leaves you a spare day.

Water temperature matters too: the sea is coldest in February and March, so bring or hire a shorty or 3 mm wetsuit from December to April.

Who should skip Dolphin House

  • Non-swimmers and small children. This is open water with depth under you. The lifejacket helps, but a Giftun island day or the semi-submarine is a better first trip; see our family guide.
  • The seasick. The 1.5-hour crossing north is the roughest leg in the area. The Giftun islands and Orange Bay are much closer.
  • Anyone set on seeing dolphins at any cost. If that is the only goal, no wild trip can deliver it. For a wider view of the options, see our dolphin trips guide.
  • People with back problems or pregnancy on a speedboat — the sellers' own warning.

Everyone else: go on a calm morning, with a boat that ties up at the mooring and lends lifejackets, and treat dolphins as the bonus on a good snorkel day. For the other reefs worth asking for, see our best snorkeling spots.

Where is Dolphin House in Hurghada, Egypt?

Dolphin House is Sha'ab El Erg, a horseshoe reef about 20 km north-north-east of Hurghada Marina, roughly opposite El Gouna. It is open sea, reached only by boat — about 1.5 hours by day yacht from Hurghada, or from Abu Tig Marina in El Gouna.

How much is a Dolphin House trip in Hurghada?

Shared yacht days start from about $21 on Headout and from about $30–39 on GetYourGuide; VIP yachts cost about $44–50 and a private speedboat about $213 per boat. Add the zone fee if it is not included (the EEAA lists USD 10), any coast-guard fee and outer-resort pick-up.

Will I definitely swim with dolphins at Dolphin House?

No. The dolphins are wild and use the reef to rest; some days they are there and calm, some days not. When they are, you swim quietly near them from the lagoon side, with a lifejacket, and never touch or chase them.

Is Dolphin House Hurghada the same as Dolphin World?

No. Dolphin House is a reef at sea with wild dolphins. Dolphin World is a captive dolphinarium with pool shows in Makadi Bay.

Which dolphins live at Dolphin House?

Mostly Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins, sometimes spinner dolphins. They hunt offshore at night and rest at Sha'ab El Erg by day.

Is Dolphin House good for children or non-swimmers?

Only with care. Everyone wears a lifejacket, but the reef is exposed and the crossing is long. For young children or non-swimmers a Giftun day or the semi-submarine is the easier choice.

Can you go diving at Dolphin House Hurghada?

Yes. Sha'ab El Erg is a dive site with a lagoon, pinnacles and an outer reef, and some yacht days add a try dive. Ask for a 1:1 instructor ratio on any intro dive from a boat.
