Hurghada snorkeling is a boat business. The reefs in front of the town are largely damaged by building work, so the coral you came for is out at the islands: mostly around Giftun Kebir, about 8–12 km offshore, plus Magawish to the south and the Dolphin House reef to the north. Almost every trip on sale is one of five formats, and the differences between them matter more than the brand names on the listing.

This page sorts them out: what each format really is, what a day looks like hour by hour, what the price covers and what you pay in cash on the day, and which listings are worth booking. If you already know you want a particular beach, go straight to Orange Bay or the Giftun island guide.

The five kinds of Hurghada snorkeling trip

1. Shared yacht, full day (7–9 hours)

The mass-market product and, for most people, the right one. A motor yacht leaves Hurghada Marina around 08:30–09:00, makes two snorkel stops at Giftun's reefs, lands you on a beach (usually Orange Bay) and serves lunch on board. You get shade, toilets, a sun deck and a snorkel guide. The downside is time: on the cheapest days you get about an hour on the beach, and the yacht spends a long time at anchor and on the crossing.

Prices run from about $26 for budget boats such as Zanetta's Orange Bay day to about $80 for "VIP" boats with a BBQ buffet or a massage on board. "Luxury" is the seller's word, not a standard.

2. Speedboat island-hopping (4–8 hours)

A shared speedboat reaches Giftun in about 20 minutes instead of 45. You spend more time in the water and on beaches, less time sailing. Titles count "2 islands", "3 islands" or "6 islands" (more on that below). Shared seats start at about $35. The trade-off is comfort: speedboats slam in a chop, and sellers themselves flag them as unsuitable for back problems and pregnancy.

3. Sea taxi (4 or 8 hours on an island)

A fast shared boat that drops you on Orange Bay or Magawish and picks you up later, for about $27–28. It is transport plus a beach day, not a guided snorkel tour. Good value if you mainly want sand and a swim; poor value if you want to see the reefs.

4. Private boat

You hire the whole speedboat or yacht, choose the stops and the timing, and dodge the late-morning crowds. GetYourGuide prices private speedboats per boat, from about $67 for a 4-hour trip up to about $290. For a family of four or more, that can work out cheaper per head than VIP-yacht seats. Details on the private boats page.

5. Half-day and sunset

Genuinely short trips are rare. The 3-hour sunset yacht is the best-known; a handful of others run 3–4 hours. Many listings with "sunset" in the title are 5–9-hour island days that simply come back late — read the duration, not the title. See half-day and sunset trips.

Around these five sit the semi-submarine (2 hours, a window deck about 3 m below the surface, good for non-swimmers) and dive-combo days with a short try dive for beginners. They have their own pages: semi-submarines and snorkeling with a try dive.

Where Hurghada boat trips go: the islands and reefs

Almost all snorkel boats leave Hurghada Marina (also called the New Marina) in Sakkala. Mahmya's own boats are the exception: they leave from Mahmya Beach Marina by Sheraton Beach. El Gouna boats use Abu Tig Marina. The chart shows where everything sits and how long the crossing takes.

  1. Abu Minqar15 min by speedboat · 20 min by yacht
  2. Giftun Kebir20 min by speedboat · 45 min by yacht
  3. Orange Bay20 min by speedboat · 45 min by yacht

  8. Abu Ramada35 min by speedboat · 75 min by yacht
  9. Dolphin House (Sha’ab El Erg)90 min by yacht

Typical one-way times in calm sea; the north wind makes the open-water crossings slower and bumpier.

A few things the chart makes obvious and the listings do not:

  • Orange Bay, Paradise and Mahmya are three beaches on one island, Giftun Kebir. Orange Bay is on the west shore facing Hurghada, the shortest crossing; Paradise and Mahmya share the south tip, a little further out. "Orange Island" and "Paradise Island" are sales names for those beaches.
  • Magawish is a separate island off south Hurghada, about 20 minutes by sea taxi. It is not part of Giftun, although many trips pair the two.
  • Abu Minqar is the mangrove island closest to the marina. Boats stop at its sandbank; no activities are allowed on the island itself.
  • Dolphin House (Sha'ab El Erg) is a horseshoe reef about 20 km north-north-east, roughly opposite El Gouna: about 1.5 hours by day yacht. It is the wild-dolphin trip; see Dolphin House.
  • Utopia is not near Giftun at all. It sits about 45 km south between Soma Bay and Safaga: a road transfer plus a 40-minute boat ride.
  • Hula Hula is a beach-club brand, and sellers disagree on which island it is on. Ask which island your boat lands on.

The best snorkeling is at the reef stops, not off the beaches. If you can choose, ask for Gota Abu Ramada, the shallow pinnacles south of Giftun nicknamed "the Aquarium" for the density of fish. Most listings do not name their reef stops, so ask the seller which reefs the boat uses. Our ranking is on the best snorkeling spots page.

What "3 islands" or "6 islands" really means

Island counts are the most misleading words in Hurghada trip titles. They count beaches, sandbanks and reef stops, often several on the same island.

Title says What the listing actually visits
2 islands the best-known listing does not name them; other trips pair Giftun (Orange Bay) with Magawish
3 islands Orange Bay, "Giftun" and Magawish: Orange Bay is a beach of Giftun, so it is two islands
4 islands one listing names Orange Bay, Nemo Beach, Abu Minqar and Magawish
6 islands the Go Shalabi 6-islands speedboat: Orange Bay, a Giftun reef, Abu Minqar and its sandbank, Big and Small Magawish, "White Island" sandbank

None of this makes the trips bad. A "6 islands" speedboat day is a lively mix of short stops, and Go Shalabi's own page is clear about it: about an hour on Orange Bay and an hour on Magawish. Just do not pay extra expecting six separate islands. "White Island" and "Nemo Beach" on a Hurghada boat are sandbank names used loosely near the Giftun reefs, not the White Island at Ras Mohammed off Sharm.

A snorkeling day trip, hour by hour

Times vary by boat, but the shape of the day barely changes. This is Zanetta's published Orange Bay timetable, a good example because it gives a full two hours on the beach:

A full-day yacht trip to Orange Bay
  1. Pick-up time and details arrive the evening beforeanother seller sends them at 22:00

  2. Hotel pick-up in Hurghadafrom Makadi, Soma Bay or Safaga expect to leave earlier

  3. Boat leaves Hurghada Marinayour passport details go on the coast-guard passenger list

  4. First guided snorkel stop on a Giftun reefgear and lifejackets on board

  5. Second snorkel stopZanetta offers support for non-swimmers

  6. Lunch on board

  7. Ashore at Orange Bay until 14:30on cheaper trips, about an hour only

  8. Back at the marina, transfer to the hotelother boats return 15:30–16:30

The standard pattern across sellers is pick-up 07:00–08:15, boats out 08:30–09:00, two reef stops, a beach, lunch and back at the marina 15:30–16:30. The single number worth checking before you book is time on the island: it ranges from about an hour on the cheapest trips to about two hours on others. Royal Cruise Hurghada's day, for example, gives 75 minutes on Orange Bay.

Orange Bay is quietest early. The morning yachts land from about 11:00 after their two reef stops, and the beach fills fast. A speedboat or a private boat gets you ashore before that wave; Mahmya's own 08:30 boat does the same for its beach on the south tip.

Checked on 20 October 2026. Many boat trips include the island or park fee, many don't: read the listing.

  • The national-park fee for Giftun is USD 5 per foreign visitor (children under 7 free). Sellers usually ask about €5 in cash when it is not in the price. A rise to USD 10 has been decreed but postponed; the EEAA fee page carries the official rate.
  • A coast-guard fee of about €5 per person on some trips. Ask what each cash charge is for.
  • Pick-up from outer resorts: roughly €8–15 per person (Go Shalabi charges $15–23).
  • Lunch on some speedboat and dive-centre days, plus drinks on the island, the crew's photo package and tips.

Children usually pay about half, roughly from age 3 or 4 up to 9 or 12, depending on the operator; under-3s or under-4s often go free. Booking direct is sometimes cheaper: Royal Cruise sells its Orange Bay day for $45 on its own site against from $53 on GetYourGuide. Zanetta charges the same either way. Best snorkeling trip in Hurghada: our picks

There is no single best trip, but there is a best trip for most people. These four have the strongest records and the clearest itineraries.

Four trips worth booking

1

First-timers who want one classic day

The most-reviewed boat day in Hurghada: a yacht to Orange Bay, Giftun's reefs and Magawish with lunch and a look-out for dolphins on the way. The listing does not name the boat company.

2

Budget, with the most beach time

Zanetta's Orange Bay day is among the cheapest and gives about two hours ashore. Island entry fees are covered; up to 35 guests.

3

A more comfortable boat

Royal Cruise Hurghada's "luxury" day: buffet, drinks, one massage per guest and a reef stop at Abu Ramada. Only 75 minutes on Orange Bay, though.

4

Active families and couples who hate sitting still

Go Shalabi's 6-islands speedboat: short hops, sandbanks and two snorkel stops. Lunch ($20) and a €5 reserve fee are extra.

A similar 3-islands day also sells on Headout. Today GetYourGuide is slightly cheaper, but the boat, pick-up area and inclusions may differ, so compare the final price including cash extras:

And the 6-islands speedboat, where GetYourGuide is also cheaper today:

Booking through GetYourGuide or Headout gives you a cancellation window and a paper trail; the contract is still with the local boat company. On GetYourGuide most listings show free cancellation up to 24 hours before, but check each listing. Booking platforms compared covers the fine print.

Trips from Makadi, El Gouna, Sahl Hasheesh, Soma Bay and Safaga

If you are staying outside Hurghada, you will usually still sail from Hurghada Marina. Listings titled "Makadi:" or "Safaga:" are mostly Hurghada trips with a longer pick-up. Expect a pick-up window of up to 90 minutes and an early start: the drive alone is about 30 minutes from Sahl Hasheesh, 40 from Makadi or El Gouna and 50 from Soma Bay or Safaga, before the bus collects other guests.

The genuine local departures are few:

The resorts guide goes through each one, with surcharges and drive times.

Safety, guides and the wind

Check the guide ratio

Egypt's Chamber of Diving and Water Sports (CDWS) licenses snorkel providers and sets one snorkel guide per 12 snorkelers, counted from the boat list. A boat with 25 guests needs at least three guides. Ask how many guides will be in the water. Any seller can be checked in the CDWS member directory and the CDWS black list. The UK government's Egypt travel advice notes that operator standards vary considerably and advises asking for a safety briefing.

The wind decides, not the operator

A north to north-west wind blows in every month; afternoons are windier. In bad weather the Red Sea Ports Authority closes the port, and then every boat stays in. Reported closures came at about 22–30 knots of wind with 2–4 m waves, usually for one to three days, mostly in winter and spring (Egypt Independent). Book your boat day early in the holiday so a closure leaves you a spare day.

On a platform booking, a weather cancellation by the boat company gets you a new date or a full refund on GetYourGuide; Headout refunds once the supplier has refunded it. With a cash seller, you chase the refund yourself.

Seasickness

The open crossing to Giftun and the long run north to Dolphin House are the rough legs. Sit mid-boat, look at the horizon, avoid a heavy breakfast and take a tablet before you board (NHS advice). Orange Bay is the shortest crossing; the semi-submarine sails only about 15 minutes.

Bring your passport

Passenger names and passport numbers go on a coast-guard list. Carry your passport or a clear copy on every boat day.

Hurghada snorkeling trips with kids

Most shared yachts suit children: there is shade, a toilet and lunch on board, and lifejackets for the reef stops. Each operator sets its own minimum age, and at least one seller does not take under-5s on its Orange Bay yacht, so ask when you book, together with whether children's life-jacket sizes are on board. Speedboats are less fun for small children in a chop. For toddlers and non-swimmers, the semi-submarine shows the reef without getting wet. The family guide has the rest, including the Grand Aquarium for windy days.

Is Hurghada good for snorkeling?

Yes, once you are on a boat. The sheltered reefs around Giftun, Magawish and Abu Ramada have good coral and dense fish, about 20–90 minutes from the marina. The reefs in front of the town are damaged, so beach snorkeling in Hurghada itself is poor; for shore snorkeling the house reefs at Makadi Bay are the best nearby.

How much is a snorkeling trip in Hurghada?

A shared yacht day starts at about $26 per person on the booking platforms, a shared speedboat seat at about $35 and a sea taxi at about $27. VIP yachts reach about $80. Private speedboats start at about $67 for the whole boat. Add the USD 5 park fee if it is not included, plus tips and any outer-resort pick-up.

Can you swim with dolphins in Hurghada, Egypt?

Sometimes, never guaranteed. Wild dolphins rest by day at Dolphin House (Sha'ab El Erg); if they are there and calm, a well-run boat lets you swim quietly near them, with fins, mask and a lifejacket and no chasing. Many island trips add "dolphin watching", which means looking out on the way. Dolphin World in Makadi is a captive dolphinarium, not a snorkeling trip.

What is the best snorkeling trip in Hurghada?

For one classic day, a full-day yacht to Orange Bay and Giftun's reefs with lunch. Pick by time on the island and reef stops rather than by the number of "islands" in the title. Zanetta's Orange Bay day gives the most beach time for the money; a speedboat or private boat gets you ashore before the crowds.

What time do snorkeling trips leave Hurghada?

Most boats leave Hurghada Marina between 08:30 and 09:00 and return between 15:30 and 16:30. Hotel pick-up is 07:00–08:15 in Hurghada and earlier from the outer resorts; the exact time usually arrives by message the evening before.

What happens if my boat trip is cancelled because of the wind?

If the port is closed, no boat sails. If the boat company cancels a GetYourGuide booking for weather, you are offered a new date or a full refund; on Headout the refund follows once the supplier has refunded it. Keep a spare day after your planned trip.
